Crime scene reports are critical components of an investigation. They reveal in great detail what a police officer or investigator saw upon arrival at the scene so that experts can later analyze the information in an effort to determine what transpired.
Therefore, crime scene reports must be as thorough as possible, leaving nothing out. Upon reporting to the scene of a crime, first establish the boundaries of the scene. Next, secure and protect the scene, ensuring the safety of all present and the security of evidence. Doing so will enable you to properly document the details in your crime scene report. You should not smoke, chew tobacco, eat, drink or use the restroom upon arriving at a crime scene. Instead, writing your crime scene report must be the first thing you do once you have ensured the safety of all individuals present and secure any available evidence.
You should also take photographs of the crime scene whenever possible unless there is a member of your team present dedicated to crime scene photography.
A crime scene report should always contain the who, what, when, where and how of an investigation. It is not possible in most cases to include the reason why a crime was committed, as this is often speculative. Information should be documented in an organized fashion and should describe all of the individuals involved in the incident.
List whether each was a victim, perpetrator or bystander.Failed to list containers code authorization permission mismatch
Describe the individual in great detail, including race, gender, height, weight, hair color, hairstyle, eye color, facial hair, any distinguishing marks and clothing worn. Take note of names, ages, addresses, contact information, occupations, employers and social security numbers for all involved parties. The narrative portion of a crime scene report should overflow with detail.
Start by noting the time you were called to the scene and explain what the caller stated had occurred. Describe who traveled to the scene with you and when you arrived. Things like time of day, temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity and light levels can be critical to an investigation, so be sure to note them all.
Include information about all involved officers or law enforcement agents, and who said and did what at the crime scene. Note any emergency personnel who responded and their reports of any injuries. Also discuss your impression of any injuries. Describe what you saw at the scene in great detail. Positions of victims, witness, perpetrators or objects are all relevant to an investigation. Take statements from all involved parties, and document their assertions about what occurred. The more information you are able to collect, the more easily the investigation can conclude quickly and justly for all involved parties.
A crime scene report should be as detailed as possible and include information about all individuals present and the locations of all persons and objects. Your impressions of the scene should be documented without including suppositions. Danielle Smyth is a writer and content marketer from upstate New York.

Writing a bank robbery incident report takes time and effort, but law enforcement benefits from such reports tremendously.
All details of the robbery must be included in a bank robbery incident report. Anything misrepresented or left out reduces law enforcement's chance of catching the robbers. Accurately describe bank robbers and their actions.Gru special forces
Provide accurate descriptions of how the robbers looked, moved and spoke. Also, include descriptions of their actions when robbing the bank. Write down all the facts. Do not include what you thought the robbers might do; only what they actually did.
Remain objective. Do not let your emotions come between writing a well-described report and a report littered with biased opinions. Write concisely and in a well-organized fashion. Concise and organized reports help law enforcement by summarizing what happened in a logical order. This allows law enforcement to get on the robbers' trail more quickly, rather than having to wade through an unorganized and lengthy report. Ensure that your report is grammatically correct.
Mistakes in grammar can lead to misunderstood facts. Include the actions of everyone else around you. Writing down who was at the scene, who took what actions and so forth, will allow law enforcement to question more people, which leads to a higher chance of capturing the robbers. The great reset: Policing in Set the scene, by introducing the people, property and other information before it is discussed. What is the secret to good police report writing?
The answer is organization and clarity. A major problem for a lot of report writers is organization, not writing the report in chronological order. Is it the writer, the victim, a witness or perhaps even the suspect?
Each of these actors in the event has their own perspective to the order of events. For the writer, the incident starts when they first arrive on the scene. For the victim, it is when they first realize they are the victim. For the witness, it is when they first see the action that makes them a witness.Rc street eliminator rules
Of course, for the suspect, it is when they make that conscious decision to commit the crime. While on patrol, date and time I received a call to location. Upon my arrival, I spoke to the victim, name who said This format is told in the order in which the events occurred to the writer.
In these cases, it is easy to use and can be understood fairly well. This format is not what I would call a report.
It is a statement from the writer saying what happened to them. In fact, in most cases, the crime has already occurred and the writer is telling the story backward.
I have a simple startup paragraph that relieves this concern and makes it clear where the information came from:. I, nameon date and time received a call to location reference to the crime.
My investigation revealed the following information. This one short paragraph is interpreted to mean you talked to all the parties involved and examined the evidence. A report is not a statement of what the writer did although this format can more or less work.
A report tells the story of what happened, based on the investigation. Some writers are concerned about being required to testify about what the report revealed.
Type 1 Sample Report
This is not a concern. When a witness tells you what they saw, you cannot testify to those facts, only that they said it to you.
Their information should be thoroughly documented in their own written statements. Crime scene technicians and experts will testify to the evidence and how it relates to the case.
Your story, told in true chronological order, will be the guide to the prosecutor of what happened. It is like the outlines in a coloring book. The prosecutor will add the color with his presentation, using all the subjects and experts as his crayons to illustrate the picture — the story.
We start the process with the opening statement I outlined above. You can change the verbiage to suit your own style. Most police reports can be organized into four types. This post deals with Type 1 reports. For an overview of all four types of reports, click here. At p. Cooper told me:. David went to the carport after school to ride the bicycle.
He saw the bicycle was missing. When his father came home, David told him that the bike had been stolen. Lawrence called the police at No one was home all day.
Neither David nor Lawrence knows when the bicycle was stolen. They did not hear any unusual noises last night. What makes it a Type 1 report? You might write a Type 1 report after a citizen reports that her bicycle was stolen. Incident reports also fall into this category. You simply record the facts.
